Didjeridu Planet 4????

The Didjeridu Planet compilations are an impressive anthology of contemporary didjeridu recordings performed by musicians from around the globe which offers a worldwide wellspring of creativity that has sprung up around one of the most primitive instruments of the planet, the Aboriginal Didgeridoo of Australia.  This unique project features didjeridu enthusiasts of all kinds and features an extraordinary array of musical styles.  From the first time recordist to the seasoned professional, this project offers a unique view of how the didjeridu is being used in modern music making all across the world.

Didjeridu Planet 3, often referred to as DP03, was completed in 2003 and is the third CD compilation project sponsored by the Didjeridu List. the project was compiled and produced by Didge List member David Blonski through his company, Timeless Productions and will be distributed in part by the contributors to the project.   For a synopsis of the project and guidelines for submitting a recording for inclusion on Didjeridu Planet 4 please read all the information below.

We are now accepting submissions of music and artwork for DP04.

DIDJERIDU PLANET PRODUCTION (quick synopsis by producer David Blonski)....
While the majority of tracks on past compilations have come mostly from the "Didjeridu List" members, submissions for the  DP04 compilation CD is open to all Didge Players on the Planet.   David Blonski (that's me) acts as producer and makes all the final decisions on what is included and how the project is put together.  I listen to each submission at least a half dozen times before the selection process begins and for the DP04 project the Didge List Membership will be asked to vote on their favorite tracks to be included.  The CD is then released and distributed through my independent label, Timeless Productions at a very minimal profit level and profits from sales to contributors and list members goes into a special Didjeridu List Account which helps to fund the production of future CD projects and other List Projects.  I see the production and handling of the DP Series as a community service.  For information on the early volumes of the Didjeridoo Planet Series visit...

MUSIC SUBMISSIONS....
1) As in DP02 and DP03, the maximum time limit for each piece will be 2 minutes and 30 seconds - longer submissions will be edited to fit this time slot.  This was often done with artists who submitted their commercial CDs for consideration. Submissions may be shorter however.....  Our shortest track on DP02 was 1 minute and 13 seconds.

2) The main selection criteria that I use are musicality, quality of didge playing, originality, and overall recording quality.  1st consideration will be given to List Members who have not yet participated in the Didjeridu Planet project but it is not a guarantee for inclusion and  the submission process is open to any didge player on the planet and past contributors are equally welcome.  If you are a previous contributor I recommend that you create something completely different from your previous submission(s) as I will be comparing them to what you have already submitted. Four points are awarded in the four categories with one extra point being added for being a Mills List Member and one extra point if you have never been included on a previous Didjeridu Planet CD making 18 points the highest possible score.

3) Acceptable formats are:  * DAT tapes,  * CDs or CD-Rs with CD quality sound files, * Mini-Disc, * Stereo or mono Wave or Aiff files or MP3s sent in on Zip Disk, (IBM format only).  * Mac or IBM users can send MP3 files as attachment via E-mail at.... submissions@timelessproductions.com , or post larger Wave of Aiff files on a web site for download.... (please record these at CD quality),  * Stereo Cassettes with or without Dolby B or C or Dbx noise reduction,  * 1/4 inch stereo (1/4 track) analog reel to reel with or without Dbx noise reduction.  (I can probably play back 1/2" 2-track stereo masters on my 4 track deck with reasonable quality.),  * Hi-Fi VHS & S-VHS tapes, Hi-Fi 8mm or Hi8 video tapes and mini DV tapes,  * ADAT tapes at 16 or 20 bit resolutions,  * 1/2 inch analog 8-track tapes

4) It is possible that I may want to add EQ, or a bit of Reverb to your tracks but very limited processing will be done unless specifically requested.  I may make recommendations if I think other treatments are necessary or beneficial.

5) Last time I had to exclude some good players and great music because the recording quality was not satisfactory.  If you get your submissions in early I will advise you if this is the case so that you can correct the problem and increase your chance for inclusion.

6) I will be willing to help produce your piece or even act as a collaborating artist as long as time allows.

7) My studio is available to all list members that can get to it at no charge for this project.

8) Apx. 30 tracks will be selected for inclusion

9) If you're an early bird and get in your submission right away... Be patient....  It will probably take several months to collect enough submissions to produce DP04.

10) While the contributing artist(s) retain all copyrights to their original works, tracks from DP04 may be broadcast via radio or internet-radio and short samples may be played or made downloadable to promote sales of the CD at in-store listening stations, e-stores and the personal web sites of our various contributors.  However, only the contributing artist is permitted to offer or license the use of complete high resolution files of their music for download on the internet.
Any other commercial use (ie. licensed use in tv, movie, video production) of individual tracks requires permission from and has to be licensed by the contributing artist.  If Timeless Productions handles negotiations and contracts for such use the artist will receive 60% of any fee collected.  If the artist opts to handle the contract and licensing of their personal track they may do so in any way they wish without permission from Timeless Productions.  We would like to be notified of such use, however, in case it has any promotional value for the CD project itself.

ART SUBMISSIONS....
Art for the cover and design elements of the CD graphics have also been traditionally created from submitted artwork by list members so submissions are not limited to just music.  See www.timelessproductions.com/dp02art for details on submissions of art for our last project.  Since I have design templates, experience and contacts for getting the printing done I would prefer to do the layout myself but I would appreciate help if there is someone on the list with design ideas and extensive graphics design knowledge.  I personally use a Windows version of PageMaker and I have a local printer who can print direct from computer files.  Cover Images created on the computer should be 5"x5" at 300 dpi and tray card should be about 5"x6" at 300 dpi (apx 7 - 12 MB).   Check out the DP02 and DP03 graphics carefully and contact me directly for specifics if you have any further questions.  Save computer images as a CYMK bitmap or tiff file.  You can send in your art submission via email as a 72 dpi jpeg file for judging purposes but if your artwork is selected I will need it in the 300 dpi format.

WEB SITE...
Since I have my hands full with the production of the music and graphics package I would appreciate it if someone else would handle setting up and publishing the Liner Notes on the Web.  Dave Crowder did an outstanding job on DP02 with assistance from Kenneth Woodruff and John Snyder.
The DP02 web site can be visited for ideas at... http://home.mindspring.com/~mcdave1/dp2linn.html
The DP03 web site is at... www.timelessprductions.com/music/catalog/dp03

FINANCES.....
We finance the initial production run through pre-sales to List Members and Contributors.  The pre-release sale price for List Members and Contributors is $5 each (what a deal!).  After release the price remains the same for all contributors but the "list member" price increases to $10.  Normal Retail price to non-list members will range from $15 to $18 depending upon the outlet and their markup of the CD.  Contributors get two free copies but are asked to purchase a minimum of 10 copies (not required) to help finance the first run.   Contributors or List Members can pre-purchase as many copies as they want (10, 25, 50, 100?).  This will also allow our list members with commercial affiliations to help sponsor the project while getting CDs for their business at a great price.  The list is only responsible for covering the first time production costs...  all re-prints are covered in full by Timeless Productions with no further charge to the list while prices to contributors and members remains the same.   Profits from Contributor and List Member sales go into a special "List Account" (more on this later).   I do make a couple dollars on List Member sales after the release of a project but, considering the nearly 300 hours that I put into production and the ongoing bookwork and shipping and handling that my wife and I are required to do, that's a pretty minimal amount.  The only money I make on the project is from my off list sales so in that sense I'm just like any of the other contributors.  Since I have so many promotional costs involved in operating a music label it is likely to be a long time before I actually see any profit (if ever) from my involvement in these "List Projects", so as I said, I consider it community service.

All profits from sales to contributing artists and list members are cycled back into a special "List Account" that is used for funding this and future list projects just as with DP02 and DP03.  Since sales of the DP Series directly sponsors "List" projects and I make no money from contributor or pre-release list member sales, no royalties are paid out to contributors on any of our sales.  In a sense, they are also contributing to the "List Project Account".  Any contributing artist who wants to benefit financially from the project may do so by purchasing as many copies as they wish at $5 each for resale at full price or they can wholesale them at $10 and still make a tidy profit that they can put in their pocket, purchase their next didge with or make a contribution to any Aboriginal program that they wish to.  This sets up a grassroots distribution program that directly benefits the contributors of the project if that is their desire.

THE "LIST ACCOUNT" AND USE OF PROJECT FUNDS...
Initially I had to kick in an extra $500 above what was collected through pre-sales to cover the first production run of DP02.    Although DP02 has received much acclaim, sales have been a slow but we have still managed to make up for the initial shortfall and built up a small surplus in the Didge Planet account.  The surplus has now been used to help cover first run expenses on DP03 and we are once again in the red but be do hope to get far enough ahead to be able to produce future Didjeridu Planet recordings and to perhaps revive the 1st Didjeridu Planet that is now out of print.

Besides financing the DP Series of recordings, other possible uses for the "surplus" in the "List Account" include financial aid in shipping the "Wandering Didge"... www.brandichase.com/didjeridu/wander.htm   and the "Wandering Didge 2" www.timelessproductions.com/didjeridoo/wd2 . We may also want to produce a CD from the recordings that are produced by those that are particiapating in the Wandering Didge Project.

(This is a bit off topic so read the following paragraph only if you have an interest in this project).
This instrument is taking way too much time in exchanging hands.  The "personal handoff" is a nice touch if convenient but in my opinion a two week maximum for each participant should be the rule of thumb.  If you can't arrange for a convenient handoff date during the second week of it's stay with you it should be immediately shipped out to the next participant and insured for $500.  If you are financially strapped and this small price to pay for participating is too much for you....  submit your shipping bill and I will re-imburse you for 80% of the cost.  This is something that I hope will quick start the exchange process and stimulate more movement but please only submit your bill if it is a real financial hardship.

There are a couple of other "good will" ideas that have been suggested that I will additionally keep in mind.  However, I reserve the right to choose the way in which to best use the funds because "the list" is notorious for being locked in debate even over the most honorable issues.

Remember... pre-release List Member price for the DP04 compilation CD is only $5 each in US currency. You can order as many copies as you want. After release the List Member price will be $10 but that will include shipping. Retail price to non-list members will be $15. Contributors to the CD will get the $5 price on a permanent basis.
